Moffat Beach Park Playground

Moffat Beach Park Playground

Caloundra, Queensland

We were invited by the Sunshine Coast Council to consider the design and installation of a new playground that would replace the existing playground but using the footprint of the iconic and historically significant fig tree. It was essential that tree preservation measures were considered within the design phase as well as the construction phase.  The council were clear that they wanted the design to have a series of linked play nodes that inter–connected and it was important to provide a unique and creative design in which the existing post-hole locations were re-used.

After researching the history of the area, we decided to incorporate skillion roofs into our design which were a common architectural feature in Caloundra back in the days when people owned holiday homes.  We also gave names to each beach hut as it was common for houses in Caloundra to be given a name.  As the park is on the beach, we wanted to keep the beach theme and therefore included a beach hut together with 4 surf boards which we had custom made to use as a climbing frame.  We had to include the names ‘Pa and Ma’ to add the personalized touch! We were thrilled to hear that Moffat Beach Park Fig Tree Playground won the Parks and Leisure Australia Awards of Excellence for the title of ‘Best Playspace Under $500,000 2016’
